Letter from the Executive Director

Hello Community Members and Library Lovers,

As we all are aware, this is a stressful time for us all. The COVID-19 pandemic is making things difficult for all residents of Christian County. It is a privilege and lovely to be able to share some GREAT news...the Christian County Library is expanding by adding long-planned, much needed full-service library branches in the cities of Clever and Sparta!

For over 12 years the Christian County Library has held onto plans for building these two branches, but it was not until the Christian County community, in August of 2017,  graciously approved the renewal of our tax levy rate when funding was available for expansion. And from sound financial planning and counsel, the library was now in the position to fulfill its campaign process of building two new community branch locations.

Adding both the Clever and Sparta Community Branch locations is possible by purchasing general obligation bonds in the amount of $4.1 million. The required funds needed to purchase and pay off these bonds have been factored into the library’s annual operating budget. Luckily for us, it was the most cost-effective and economical to build both branches at the same time.

The construction work has begun in Clever as of mid-April. It is set to begin in Sparta as soon as possible. Weather and the COVID-19 pandemic have caused a few delays and may create a few in the future, but the current timeline has the branches being built over the next 10 - 12 months. It is projected that the Clever Community Branch will hold its grand opening in Winter 2021 and the Sparta Community Branch should be open in Spring 2021.

The Christian County Library’s mission is to spread literacy, build community, provide needed resources, and be a general help to the people in our county. With the expansion and building of these two community branches, there will be four full-service community library branch locations across the Highway 14 corridor resulting in 95% of the Christian County population being within just ten miles of a library!

What happens next for Christian County Library? The completion of the community branches in the cities of Clever and Sparta will fulfill the campaign promise we made from the August 2017 election, in addition to completing the library’s current strategic plan. The Administrative staff and Board of Trustees will be working hard over the next year to create the next strategic plan for the Christian County Library, ensuring that the community we serve will be considered and consulted during this process.

In closing, this is a very exciting time for Christian County. I am excited to be able to share this news with you all. For construction updates and news please visit our website or social media because we are building community at the Christian County Library!

Thank you!
